Bioenergy: The Future Energy for Indonesia

Bioenergy research and development is not a new thing in this world. Currently, bioenergy has become a renewable energy source that is being massively developed in Indonesia. With abundant natural resources, easy to find and renewable, Indonesia has the potential to become a bioenergy store in the world.

As we know, energy is a basic requirement for everyday life. If the level of dependence on energy is very high, what if someday that energy runs out? This is the reason why we need to switch to bioenergy, as New and Renewable Energy (EBT). The raw materials are always available for sustainable reproduction. Bioenergy can be used as electricity generation as well as fuel. By using bioenergy, it means that we contribute to realizing the goals of national energy policies, namely maximizing renewable energy and minimizing consumption of fossil energy.

Bioenergy Potential for Power Generation

Regarding its utilization as power generation energy, the bioenergy potential that Indonesia has is very large, namely 442 Gigawatts (GW). However, the utilization is only 99.4 GW or around 2%. This is the reason for the Government to encourage bioenergy development to answer the challenge of achieving the 23% target in 2025.

Bioenergy Potential of Biodiesel

As a fuel, biodiesel also has a great potential to be developed. This is not only because biodiesel can replace diesel fuel which is widely used for transportation, but also because Indonesia has a variety of plants that can be used as raw material for biodiesel such as palm oil and jatropha. Currently, Indonesia is implementing a mandatory B30 biodiesel program in various sectors such as micro-businesses, fisheries, agriculture, transportation and public services (subsidized), non-subsidized transportation, power generation, industry and commercial.

Bioenergy Potential Type of Bioethanol

Apart from biodiesel, there is bioenergy in the form of bioethanol which can be an alternative fuel to replace gasoline. Bioethanol comes from potential carbohydrates as raw materials, such as corn, cassava, sweet potato, sago and sugarcane. From some of these raw materials, it is known that maize is a superior raw material to become the main material for bioethanol because apart from being relatively cheap in terms of economics, the amount of bioethanol produced by maize is actually greater than the other plants.

Indonesia has enormous bioenergy potential. This means that the potential for realizing better energy security and environmental quality is also great. Hopefully Indonesia can achieve the target of bioenergy development and utilization as planned.
